Maj. Gen. Gagandeep Bakshi

SM, VSM

Major General Gagandeep Bakshi (retd) is possibly India’s most famous thinking and talking military veteran, certainly the most popular with the resurgent nationalists. Author of several well-researched books on military strategy
He briefly joined the Vivekananda International Foundation as deputy director to the then director, Ajit Doval, before moving on to a more multifaceted and diverse trajectory. Maj Gen GD Bakshi became an Army man in defiance of his family. His father, SP Bakshi, was Chief Education Officer of the Jammu & Kashmir State Forces (6 J& K Rifles) and a personal tutor to the then Yuvraj Karan Singh. When the State forces were merged with the Indian Army, he was sent to the Corps of Signals, from where he retired.

His elder son, Srishthi Raman Bakshi, joined the 6 J&K Rifles (affectionately called the ‘family regiment’) in 1963, and at the tender age of 23 years was killed in a mine blast in the 1965 war (24 September 1965). Bakshi received a Vishisht Seva Medal, but was denied the next rank as peace talks took priority in New Delhi. Thereafter he volunteered to be posted to Jammu & Kashmir’s toughest counter-terrorism sector, Kishtwar, where he served in the Rashtriya Rifles for 27 months. A thinking soldier, he devoted retirement to academics, doing his PhD on military history, which was published as Limited Wars in South Asia. His enduring contribution, however, is The Rise of Indian Military Power: Evolution of an Indian Strategic Culture (2010), which traces India’s military culture from the Vedas to the post-independence wars. In all, he has penned 35 books and 2 novels. Three poetry collections emerged as the best way to pass time on lonely postings, between battles and skirmishes. It is often believed that to be born with a silver spoon in one's mouth doesn't accompany any hardships or failure, rather relish the luxurious delicacies and affluent lifestyle that the trail of ancestors has to offer. However, the journey that I am going to recount about is far from this assumption or belief.

Mr. Sat Paul Nirula traces his genesis back to an upper-middle-class family of Amritsar, Punjab which was amongst the good books of the district due to the dynamic and large-scale operations at the work front along with healthy communication spirits. He had spent his golden period of life in the lap of holy origin (Amritsar) thereafter, moving to the metropolitan city(Delhi) with his family. Here, he successfully completed his higher secondary education followed by graduation from the esteemed University of Delhi. Little did he know then that his life would take a drastic turn on the demise of his respected and beloved father. Undoubtedly, his lifestyle and his approach to a life transformed because of this painful turning point.
Indeed, it was a strenuous situation for the young lad who was soon burdened with the family responsibilities. However, the determination and will power of the young man was so strong that this heavy loss didn't subside his intentions and direction towards life.

He soon buckled up and was ready to embark upon a journey which was to be steered singlehandedly.By the grace of God, he was immediately offered the duty of Liaison officer in Modella Group of Industries. His zeal, enthusiasm and willingness to do work sincerely resulted in two successful hits- First, his strong and groomed personality and second, the raised goodwill of the company.Gradually, his undying efforts paved way to his new aura in the work field wherein his strong public relations with the upper class and lower class at levels, private and government made him no less than a fine gentleman. At the same time, amidst the entire thick and thins, he duly fulfilled his family responsibilities as a son and a brother. In some time, his interest shifted and inclined towards Advertising, and gradually established his own entrepreneurship titled 'NIRULA ADVERTISING SERVICES' which is on the roll currently. With a good amount of exposure, adequate amount of zest and well versed with the intricacies of his work sector, he has established his business with firm roots. And, it is to note that it has been him and his calm persona together actively involved throughout from creation to the productive result.
